Healing with The Power of the 1º Shift

Introduction

Picture this: a pilot sets a course with a specific destination, but accidentally inputs a destination that’s just 1º off. Doesn’t seem like much, right? But over time, this small change means she’ll end up miles away from where she intended to be. In fact, it’s estimated that for every hour she flies, she’ll be 60 miles off course. Althought this is a negative experience for a pilot, in healing we can use this concept for our benefit. The positive power of the 1º Shift  is a concept I use to illustrate how small, consistent changes can lead to substantial differences in our healing journeys, over time.

Small Changes, Big Impact

In healing, as in flying, it’s the little things that count. We often think we need grand gestures or massive life overhauls to see positive change. But in reality, it’s the small, sustainable actions repeated over time that create the most significant impact.

Examples of the 1º Shift in Action:

  • Morning meditation: Start your day with a simple two-minute meditation or a short gratitude journal entry. This small shift can set a positive tone for the day, slowly transforming your mindset.
  • Sleep Improvement: Introduce a tech-free zone 30 minutes before bed (or even just 15 min if 30 min feels too much). This minor change can significantly improve your sleep quality and mental clarity.
  • Self-care Practices: Incorporate brief, regular self-care moments, like a short walk during lunch or a weekly bubble bath. These practices, though small, can greatly reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
  • Boundary Setting: Begin by setting one small, low-stakes boundary, such as not checking emails after work hours. This can lead to improved work-life balance and reduced anxiety.

The Compound Effect of the 1º Shift

Just like the pilot’s deviation, the effects of these small changes compound over time. A few minutes of meditation daily might seem trivial, but over weeks and months, the shift in your mental state can be profound. These small adjustments, maintained consistently, gradually steer us toward a healthier, more balanced life.

The idea of the 1º Shift reminds us that healing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s just about making really small but entirely sustainable changes. These tiny shifts can lead you to a destination far different than where you started – one of greater peace, health, and happiness.
